Iritisen Muhammad is a Birth Doula, Birth Photographer, Breastfeeding Educator and Birth Justice advocate based in Chicago, Illinois.
Hey! I’m Iritisen, a compassionate and incredibly kind friend to all.
I was a professional Nanny for 10 years here in Chicago. In the spring of 2018 I felt a strong calling to become a Birth Doula — so I did, gracefully switching my focus from cultivating children to mothering the mother, and I'm obsessed!
Trust, I’m still passionate about caring for children and I believe they should receive endless amounts of love, constant encouragement, gentle correction and support. I hold the same convictions when it comes to an expecting and laboring mother.
I am here, cultivating safe spaces for the expecting, laboring and postpartum Mother. I’m here educating, advocating and capturing raw moments via photographs. I’m cracking jokes and massaging sore shoulders. I’m intuitively observing and stepping in to serve.
I love listening to stories, singing loudly in my car and laughing until my stomach hurts. I adore all things vintage fashion, making people feel good, painting + daydreaming. I’ll always be down for a hot cup of ginger tea and a soul satisfying heart to heart conversation.
My Certifications:
2018 - DONA Trained
2019 - Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED
2020 - CAPPA Lactation Educator
My Philosophy
I believe God created all people in His image and likeness.
I believe birth is a normal, natural, and healthy process.
I believe mothers and babies have the inherent wisdom necessary for birth.
I believe pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period are milestone events in the continuum of life. These events affect mothers, fathers, babies, and families in unique ways. These events have profound and long-lasting effects on society.
I believe every mother should have the opportunity to have a healthy and joyous birth experience for herself regardless of her age or circumstances!
I believe every mother should give birth as she wishes in an environment in which she feels nurtured and secure. She should give birth in an environment where her emotional well-being, privacy, and personal preferences are respected.
The most helpful part of the doula support was having another brain filling in the easy to miss things for me. As a new mom and even during my pregnancy, I definitely developed "placenta brain", insomnia and general fatigue. Having someone like Iris who got to know me first and then was able to fill in the gaps was irreplaceable. Someone who is very experienced caring for others and was able to help me set my expectations and then figure out new ones was great.
